Taiwan is the perfect place for precision medicine

Taiwan, with its population of relatively homogeneous genetic background, comprehensive national health insurance, advanced medical system with many years of electronic medical records, and excellent R&D in information science, is in the perfect position to pursue "precision medicine".

However, to realize precision medicine, the foundational work of collecting genetic profiles and clinical data from a large Taiwanese cohort must be done.

Taiwan Precision Medicine Initiative

The goal of Taiwan Precision Medicine Initiative (TPMI) is to achieve tailored medical treatment and health management for everyone in Taiwan. By utilizing big data analysis of the genetic and clinical information of a large cohort to accurately predict personal risk for common diseases, TPMI aims to promote early disease screening, effective treatment, and prevention in Taiwan.

Approach

TPM Consortium

Taiwan Precision Medicine Initiative (TPMI) is a joint effort of Academia Sinica and 16 partner hospitals across the country.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the advantage of Precision Medicine?
  1. Increase efficacy and safe use of medications
  2. Facilitate early diagnosis and health promotion
  3. Provide personalized healthcare
How does the Taiwan Precision Medicine Initiative (TPMI) help me?

Data gathered by the TPMI will improve disease risk prediction and help doctors tailor your care according to your genetic profile for disease prevention, early disease screening, most appropriate treatment, and best quality of life.

Does it test only once?

When you join TPMI, you only need to do the genetic test once. By profiling 1 million participants with a set of genetic markers designed for Taiwan, we can identify risk factors associated with common diseases and continue to upgrade the gene chip. As a participants, your genetic profile will be part of your medical records and used by your physicians in your health care.

Is there any difference in joining the TPMI at different hospitals?

It is free of charge for TPMI participants until June 30, 2023.

Joining TPMI

The TPM array is a Taiwan-specific SNP array that tests ~300,000 known risk variants at the same time plus ~400,000 mapping SNPs for the Taiwan population.
Once tested, one will know one’s status for known risk variants for specific genetic disorders and response to many medications. Our partner hospitals will enroll participants according to its own protocol. Please call the clinical managers for details if you have any questions.
